As stated in an earlier post, some of these may seem counter-intuitive at first blush but bear in mind that the intent of this series is to encourage creativity and imagination and does not focus on maximization of any of these characters. Today we give you Patrin Myastan, the chaotic good dragonborn paladin.

Patrin’s story:

“A young dragonborn without a clan is a rarity. However, that’s exactly how I grew up. I have no memory of my original clan or even my parents. In fact, my earliest recollections are of my struggles living on the streets of Waterdeep. Chronically hungry, I scavenged what I could from waste dumps and gutters to stay alive. I recall scraping maggots from my food on more than one occasion and maggots, as everyone knows, only feast on rotting, necrotic meat. In those days my only instinct was survival. Just as a maggot’s only purpose is to survive on rotten food, I feasted on Waterdeep’s refuse. Consequently, my body still endures the lingering effects of malnourishment. I am prone to common colds and respiratory infections, mild headaches, nausea, and but for the grace of Torm, my body heals very slowly from wounds.

My Saving Grace

When I got caught rummaging through an unsecured root cellar behind a tavern a kindly acolyte decided it was foolish to punish a child for trying to stay alive. To appease the barkeep, the acolyte paid him enough gold to completely restock his cellar two times over. Few people would spare a hungry dragonborn a single nib or a crust of bread but this man readily handed over several gold dragons for ‘just an urchin living under the street‘.

My time spent with this mysterious man was very brief. He introduced me to an orphanage dedicated to Torm. He spoke with one of the clerics there and handed over a pouch that I suspect was even more gold and bade me a curt, but polite, farewell. I would never see this life-saving benefactor again. Nor would I hear anything further of him. It would be nice to learn of his whereabouts but I don’t actively seek him. His legacy lives on within me. Thus began my service to Torm. Since then I have dedicated my life to serving the oppressed and the needy. No one’s lot in life should be undue suffering and woe to him who inflicts undue suffering onto others.

I Got Issues

Aside from Torm, I have a hard time trusting in anyone.  In fact, I am suspicious of the very orphanage that took me. I don’t have any evidence that they have any ill intent at the orphanage but since I send them a great deal of the gold I find in my adventures I always stop in to interview the director every chance I get.  I don’t let her beat around the bush and she has learned to be direct and forthcoming with me. As a result of my frequent questioning, the orphanage has guaranteed me a bed to sleep in whenever I am in town. Clearly being suspicious can have benefits.”

Final Thoughts
